FSIN – SK First Nations Veterans Association Vimy Ridge 2017

April 2 - April 12

During the First and Second World War, thousands of Aboriginal men and women voluntarily enlisted in Canada’s armed forces. They, fought in every theatre in which Canadian forces took part, and more than 1,000 status Aboriginal servicemen lost their lives on foreign battlefields. An estimated 800 men and women from First Nations in Saskatchewan served during the World Wars and in Korea. This request is put forth to honor the First Nations people’s sacrifice, valor and courage, as well as to give these veterans the ability to pay homage to the victory at Vimy Ridge and to partake in the 100th Anniversary Ceremonies. In 2017, Canada will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a seminal event in Canada’s history. The crowning achievement of the Centennial celebrations will be the unveiling of a state-of-the-art Vimy Visitor Education Centre near the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. The Vimy monument will offer Canadians information as to why Canadians fought and died there; why Vimy remains special to the Canadian soul; and how Vimy, and other First World War battles at which Canadians fought, forever altered Canada’s status on the world stage.
